If you’d like a touch of inspiration, you’ll find a few curated looks here.
Stresa – a prestigious resort on Lake Maggiore, long a favorite of cultural icons. Hemingway wrote of love here. Princess Margaret visited privately. Chaplin, Bernard Shaw, and Dickens—these names are woven into the town’s soul. A town rich in Belle Époque spirit, Stresa was a key stop on the Grand Tour of the 18th-19th centuries. Its architecture blends Italian restraint, French lines, and English tact. One of the most stunning viewpoints is the cable car to Mount Mottarone, which offers sweeping views of the surrounding area, mountains, and the lake.
Villa Pallavicino – a landscaped park on the former estate of the Pallavicino family. Home to 40+ species of mammals and birds including deer, llamas, white peacocks, and rare pheasants. It’s divided into an old-forest area with free-roaming animals, and a manicured rose garden and classical green alleys—designed to evoke emotion rather than mark a route.
Borromean Islands – Ferries and boats run from Stresa. The most famous is Isola Bella, known for its Italian-style palace and gardens opened in 1671. The gardens span 10 outdoor terraces with statues, fountains, and rare exotic plants.
Hermitage of Saint Catherine of the Rock – Located on the southern part of the lake in Lombardy. Legend says wealthy merchant Alberto Besozzi built the hermitage after surviving a storm crossing the lake. A chapel dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria was added. Accessible by car or ferry from Stresa.
La Rocca di Angera Fortress – On a cliff on the southern shore, originally owned by the Visconti family and since 1449 by the Borromeos. It houses one of Europe’s most important doll and toy collections, founded in 1988 by Princess Bona Borromeo Arese.
